02-03-00 CEC ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR USADR / DRM ALLIANCE
DALLAS, TX - (February 3, 2000) - Continental Electronics Corporation (CEC), a subsidiary of Tech-Sym Corporation (NYSE: TSY), today announced its support for the agreement between USA Digital Radio and Digital Radio Modiale (DRM) to work together in developing and promoting a worldwide standard for digital AM broadcasting. CEC played a significant role in the development of this agreement.

"Digital broadcasting and receiving on frequencies below 30Mhz represent significant technical challenges. The resources that can be brought to bear on these issues by USADR and DRM are significant and necessary to address these challenges," said Dan Dickey, CEC vice president of engineering. "The Grand Alliance may have been the right system for developing digital television, but it clearly is not sufficient for digital radio below 30Mhz. Unlike television, AM radio currently enjoys the same technical format around the world. If digital radio broadcasting is to displace AM analog receivers, then designers must work on a worldwide scale. This is exactly what the USADR/DRM alliance is designed to do. The advantages are obvious."

Consumers will be the biggest winner in a consistent worldwide platform. A world market for receivers ensures that they will be less expensive for everyone, ensuring AM's overall value as a global format. A receiver purchased in the United States could be used in any country where the worldwide standard is adopted.

Furthermore, AM bands allow listeners to hear broadcasts from incredible distances, often crossing international borders. An inexpensive receiver that can decode broadcasts no matter where they originate is a necessity for millions of listeners. Different digital standards around the world could restrict the free flow of information.

CEC is a founding member of DRM and occupies a seat on the steering board, which is the executive body that oversees DRM activities around the world. CEC also is aligned with USADR in the quest to bring digital broadcasting to AM and FM radio listeners in the United States.
